PART NINE

ANYWHERE BUT HERE...

27

WHEN THE AFTERNOONS were too hot to be outside, Hennie worked on the shutters in the shed. After days spent hunched over the bench, she understood now why her grandfather used to sit on a stool as he tinkered. She also saw function and working order in the way he’d laid things out around the workbench, efficient, easy to reach for something without having to look.

It was slow work, repairing all the shutters by hand. Taking each shutter apart, fixing cracks and replacing broken louvres and rotten wood, then putting it all back together. It was comforting though, calming.

There was a focus in it, in the movement of her hands. It had a way of emptying her mind, quieting the constant useless chatter, making space for the thoughts that gained clarity in subconscious wandering.

Hennie had lost count of how many shutters she’d repaired, still plenty left to go, but she had them down to a science and each one was near perfect, each one finished a little faster than the one before.

Taking a moment while a smear of putty dried, Hennie studied her hands. Slivers of splinters under her nails and in the beds of her fingertips. Old callouses roughed and prominent, new smaller ones forming. The puckered edge of a cut on the side of her finger where the chisel had slipped while carving out a mortise and tenon joint, slicing through her skin at an angle. The fine layer of sawdust and dirt that covered her from head to toe after the day’s work.
